The On30 Cascade County Narrow Gauge (CCNG) is an absolute gem. Operating on this fine layout in Eugene should be on everyones’ bucket list.
The basement layout occupies space equivalent to a two-car garage. The basic track plan is point to point with a fiddle yard connecting the two ends. Mining is the main theme with logging and farming as supporting industries.
The CCNG Board of Directors described the railroad, in their 1925 Annual Report, as “…penetrating rough country using steep grades, sharp curves and light rail to reach their objectives.” Indeed, these are the physical characteristics of this 22 mile common carrier serving the communities between Cascade and Murphy, Oregon.
The motive power roster is composed of four 2-8-0s, a 2-6-0, and two 4-4-0s. All locomotives feature sound; their sheer size helping to keep speeds prototypically low. The rolling stock roster consists of freight cars from the Nevada County Narrow Gauge and other western railroads. Passenger cars are from the Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad and are scale length. About 70 freight and six passenger cars gives the proper mix for an operating session. Scenery is 100% complete.
The railroad operates with either track warrants or timetable and train orders. The railroad features a First Class schedule; all other trains are run as extras.
Lenz DCC powers the layout with four handheld throttles.
